FrontPage Express Editor                   [Print This Page]

MS FrontPage Express HTML (web page) EDITOR.

The applications described here are for use with a PC and Windows, as that is the majority of users.
If you use another OS (Mac, Linux etc) there are programs to suit them too, see the
Web Files Tools Page.

MS FrontPage Express (FPx) is free for PCs, and many others are available with differing complexity and cost,. You can do simple text changes with a text editor (Notepad even), but if the formatting needs changing that is a hard way to do it unless you know HTML very well, and not many of us do. FPx is quite sufficient for doing a Club Web Page if you are not an expert and do not want very fancy effects, see the Web Files Guide Page.

FPx came free with Internet Explorer, (IE5.01) and with Win98 1st Ed. It was dropped from subsequent installations, but can be installed on its own in Win 9x and Win NT4, and probably in Win ME (we have not tested it, if the installer does not work, try the instructions for W2k/XP and let me know your results). The installer is NOT compatible with Windows 2000 or XP, but if the files are copied over they seem to work fine, provided that IE5+ is installed.

The contents and self expanding EXE files for download have been checked for viruses and tested clean with McAfee VirusScan and Norton AV. Note where you save it, then just navigate there in Windows Explorer, and run it (by double clicking on it in classic windows explorer).

1. Win 95, Win 98, Win NT4 (& probably Win ME) - Download FrontPage Express Installer #

* Right click on the Download FrontPage Express Installer link just above, select "Save Target As" then a directory on your disk to download the "FPXinstl.exe" file # (size 1.7MB, so will take a little while). It is best if you put this file in a directory on its own to run it, so create one for it to be downloaded to, or move it after download completes.
* In Windows Explorer, navigate to the directory where FPXinstl is. If it is not alone in the directory, create one and move it there now. When finished the installation you can delete all these files (unless you want to keep FPXinstl.exe for other installations or download it again) and even delete the directory if you created it just for this purpose.
* Run FPXinstl.exe (by double clicking on it in classic windows explorer or single . The five files that FPXinstl.exe contains will be extracted into the same directory. You might need to close the DOS file extraction window by clicking on the "x" button in top right corner of the window.
Run the FpxSetup.exe file created here, then select ONLY FrontPage Express and it will add that to your setup.
NB: Ignore the "Uniscribe not installed" error if you get one, if you have IE5+ installed - then it already is. If you haven't, then go to the Microsoft web site (www.microsoft.com/australia) and do so, for Front Page Express won't work without it.

2. Windows 2000 and XP (& maybe Win ME and even Vista) - Download FrontPage Express Files Expander #

* Right Click on the Download FrontPage Express Files Expander link just above, select "Save Target As" then a directory on your disk to download the "FPXpand.exe" file # (size 1.6 MB, so will take a little while).
* In Windows Explorer, navigate to the directory where FPXpand is. When finished the installation you can delete this file (maybe keep it for other installations or download it again) and even delete the directory if you created it just for this purpose.
* Run FPXpand.exe (by double clicking on it in classic windows explorer or single clicking on it if using web style desktop).
* Read and acknowledge the information shown, including the installation directory used (C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage Express). Click "OK" to extract the files, or "Cancel" to abort.
* You will be prompted about importing some information into the registry, accept that as it allows the Help file to work properly. You may need to have administrator rights to do this. Another small window will then advise if this was successful, acknowledge it.
* Create a Shortcut to the FPXPRESS.exe file located inside the BIN folder in the installation directory and place on your desktop and/or in your Start Menu area under the Documents and Settings Folder on your hard disk, under "All Users" if possible (again may need administrator rights).
Note: That should allow you to run the file as the system files should already be on your system.
If the system complains that there are files missing, you MAY have to install a current Internet Explorer from the Microsoft site (www.microsoft.com/australia), but that is unlikely provided you have at least IE5 or later installed.

Help File: If you find that the help (F1 or menu) function in FPx won't work when installed like this, it may be that you didn't have enough rights for importing the registry information during that step above. Log in with an administrator account and run the file (ie double click on it) "RunThisFileOnceToEnableFxpHelp.reg" located in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage Express" and accept the import.
The help file is included as Fpxpress.chm in the same "Bin" folder as the Fpxpress.exe file that you run.
You could also create a shortcut to it, name it as "FrontPage Express Help" and place it with the shortcut to the FrontPage Express executable (exe) file in your start menu area.
Note: If you want to move or rename the installation folder, that is fine, just edit this REG file above with a text editor (eg Notepad) to suit the new location and run it again, also modify or recreate any shortuts that you had created.
Note: If you installed FPx from here before this step was included, right click on this link to
download the REG file, save it to the FPx installation folder, and then run it as above.
