THE INTERNET
Rotary is keen to improve the efficiency of communications, between members, clubs and the general public using the opportunities offered by the Internet.
The District web site address is: http://rotaryd9750.org.au
and the general District e-mail is:
(at rotaryd9750.org.au)
Rotary Clubs are encouraged to have their own web site, and once established to keep it up to date. Information to help with this can be found on the District web site. The club's web site can be hosted anywhere, and opportunities exist for free web site hosting. Some, though not all, free web site domains can end up included on an Internet black list because of unsavoury or unfriendly sites hosted. RDU has created Rotarnet as a secure and cost effective facility for Rotary in the South West Pacific to access information about Rotary and as a place that clubs can arrange hosting of their site. This helps Rotary because part of the hosting fee comes back to Rotary. Even if hosted elsewhere, the club's web site can have a link in the list of clubs on Rotarnet without any cost.
The basic Rotarnet package includes your club web site (rotarnet.com.au/users/9/975nn) and an e-mailbox address (ClubName@rotarnet.com.au), cost at time of writing is $75 pa with a once off $25 setup fee. The e-mailbox is a permanent address for the club and is forwarded to a member's real e-mail address, which can be changed to suit, eg to incoming President or Secretary at changeover time. It is highly recommended to arrange something similar, even if not on Rotarnet as it remains unchanged over years and hides member's addresses. A simpler web address, "rotarnet.com.au/clubname" can also be included free in this package, but you must ask for these to be implemented. Nepean Blue (the Rotarnet Operators) will design your site for you, as will other commercial designers, for a fee depending on complexity, or you can use free templates available on Rotarnet or elsewhere and just fill in your club details to start with. Some free assistance may be at hand from your TAFE or similar. The WebSite Guide on the District site (via Club Support) has suggestions and the RI guidelines.
Other options are available (for varying extra cost of course), and include getting your own domain name for your web site and e-mail addresses ( eg rotaryclubname.org.au), and extra e-mail addresses for specific functions (president, secretary, webmaster, etc). Your own domain name can be pointed to your site on rotarnet for a small fee if you wish, and email addresses can also be added to the domain name. Further information and current costs can be found on the Rotarnet services page on Rotarnet (rotarnet.com.au), or see the WebSite Guide on the District site, which has a link to that, and the contact information for Rotarnet.
The WebSite guide can be found under the "Club Support" button on the District Web Site.
